When London was bidding to host the Olympics, it campaigned with the green card, promising to use the Games as “a catalyst for addressing important urban and inner city living concerns including climate change and water management” David Higgins, the Chief Executive of the ODA, has officially stated that "Ensuring a sustainable approach to building the Games will help ensure London 2012 is remembered not only as two weeks of fantastic sporting action, but also as the greenest games to date", championing the connection between the tradition of the event and the importance of a suitable environmental policy.
Now, we can all start to enjoy the effects. If you’re a Londoner with access to green space (or potential green space), Capital Growth can fund a planting project. Mayor Boris Johnson initiated the project last year to encourage citizens to take charge in the effort to green this city. He imagines that he will be able to inspire thousands to take up vegetable gardening by sponsoring small scale efforts. It is one of the major themes of his term, and he is determined to see it blossom in time to show off for the 2012 Olympics. In the meantime, events such as "The Big Lunch", a public picnic planned for 19th of July, are planned to keep the momentum going.
