Urban Grow-Labs

MetaboliCity is as much about the metabolism of the 'stuff' we create as the food we consume. For a long time I have been fascinated by biopolymers and how we could create them ourselves - at home.
So I was really excited to meet Brian Degger last week, a scientist, artist and DIY enthusiast (and friend of FoAM) whose developing bio-kits for amateurs wanting to manufacture, repair, create and build environmentally friendly products in their own home. One of his kits is a 'how to make your own bioplastic' completely toxin free from water, vinegar, potato starch and glycerol. You can also grow your own glowing bacteria using squids from the fishmonger (not frozen ones..)
I love how manufacturing processes, once secretive and protected are now becoming open and shared with the knowledge distributed among many.
You can join the Ning site dedicated to bioplastic at bioplastic.ning.com and see more of Brian's work at a residency at 25 Stratford Grove
A vision of a city that metabolizes its resources and waste to supply its inhabitants with all the nourishment they need and more.
MetaboliCity was initiated by London based design studio Loop.pH in 2008.
