Event Description

We will be attending Reset's debate next tuesday at the BDP Studios, Brewhouse Yard, London, EC1V 4LJ - and going for a drink afterwards if you would like to join us!

Debate: The tension between ecology and architecture
Biodiversity - our life support system – is all too often given a bit part role in architectural theatres: a player who is only there to make the lead actor look good!

But new movements in architecture, engineering, landscaping and built environment design understand that a focus on ecology and ecosystem services is essential if we are to maintain human life on this planet.

How might this affect the way we design? And why do we struggle to find ways to think ecologically, even when we believe that nature should be given a leading role?

As Brian Mc Donald of Natural England says, “We need to show that green infrastructure can be delivered across a range of scales so that it’s actually something that’s carried into all developments, from the smallest to the biggest.”

This evening of discussion and debate focuses on the perceived tension between ecology and architecture and asks participants to share their own experiences and approaches in an interactive forum. Speakers will each present a keyprinciple or approach for 5 minutes, before the chair opening the discussion up to participants from the floor.

Speakers:
Gary Grant, Chartered Environmentalist and Ecologist
Cath Basilio, Sheffield City Architecture Department/Sheffield Hallam University
Dominic Coath, Natural England

Chair:
Dusty Gedge, livingroofs.org

Will someone be recording the debate? I'd love to hear it. (Some quick notes would also be appreciated.) Thanks!
