SUMMARY:Cumulus Shanghai Conference 2010
DESCRIPTION:Young Creators for Better City and Better Life\n\nHannah J
ones and Rachel Wingfield will be presenting a paper about MetaboliCit
y under the theme of Sustainability and Social Innovation at the Cumul
us Shanghai Conference in September 2010, as part of the Shanghai Worl
d Expo 2010 and Shanghai Biennale.\n\nThe conference will explore wher
e and how a young generation of designers can, through their talents a
nd responsibility, improve our environment and life in a creative way.
The missions and visions of design education, design research and pra
ctice for young creators, together with the economic, political and so
cial impacts will also be discussed during the conference.\n\nThe conf
erence is organized into the following subthemes:\n- Create for Sustai
nability & Social Innovation\n- Renaissance of local wisdom in globali
zation\n- Activate the conversation between old & young\n- Redefine th
 e social-economic roles of design discipline\n\nAbstract:\n\nMetaboliC
ity: How can design support the cultivation of place in the city?\n\nA
s part of the sustainability agenda there is growing interest and re-v
aluing of the importance of localized food production in cities such a
s London. This paper presents the findings from a one-year (October 20
08 – October 2009) participatory design research project entitled â€
˜MetaboliCity’. This project explored how designers can intervene se
nsitively within local urban food growing communities by providing a d
esign thinking and crafting to help to sustain these initiatives and c
atalyse larger positive changes in the surrounding environment. The pr
oject was based at Central St. Martins in London, UK, facilitated by t
he design research group Loop.pH and funded by the Audi Design Foundat
ion.\n\nThe aim of the project was to create, test and adapt a customi
zable urban grow-kit at a selection of sites in London. A design team
guided local participants through a collaborative set of envisioning,
crafting, planting and documenting processes. A metadesign approach wa
s adopted to manage the complexity of such a task. Metadesign is a sys
temic, multi-disciplinary and emergent design process aimed at transce
nding existing specialist boundaries to create more joined-up solution
s for the benefit of society and nature.\n\nThis paper will introduce
the project outcomes, a set of design tools and approaches to nurture
‘knowledge ecology’ between designers, experts and different commu
nities of food growers in the city and support the cultivation of plac
 e.\n(H. Jones)\n\nFor more information visit http://www.metabolicity.c
